Posted by in Green Homes on January 5, 2012
Doing your part for the environment is very important no matter where you live. Everyday more and more pollution is being put into our environment and it is important that in the future we all work to keep our world as clean as possible. There are many ways to go about preserving our environment. Acts like recycling, using lower emission cars and using less energy to do everyday things can all help preserve energy. Green homes are becoming a popular way to help preserve the environment.
Green homes are the homes of the future is because of the benefits they offer you long term. One of the most basic ways this is possible is because of their ability to help you save money. Green homes cost less than other homes because less energy is being used to heat and cool the property as well as maintain it. Saving money on your utilities can save a household thousands over the years.
Saving money is something that everyone thinks about. Something that often gets overlooked is the ability your house has to let you know that you are doing something good for the environment, and doing your part to conserve it for the generations after yours. Environmentally friendly homes use such things as recycled materials in the construction, use less amount of energy to maintain the home, and keep the amount of waste down during the construction of the home. 6 Reasons To Build A Green Home
Posted by in Green Homes on September 2, 2011
We hear buzz words like “going green” all the time. When you log into your online banking institution or pay any number of bills, you’re confronted with the “Go Green” prompt, asking you to reduce your monthly consumption of paper and fuel. We see energy-efficient cars zipping around in traffic. You go to the grocery store and are asked if you’d like to purchase their eco-friendly shopping bags. There’s no doubt that “going green” is trendy. Whether it’s trendy because of a natural inclination to improve our planet’s health or simply because it’s something “cool”, the trend doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon. As much as the green revolution has touched on all our day-to-day activities, it’s also beginning to revolutionize the homebuilding industry. A study by NAHB and McGraw-Hill has found that between 2005 and 2010, green homebuilding has increased by 500%. That’s truly amazing! Again, one can only conjecture the specific reasons for this massive increase, but here are just a few reasons why building a green home is beneficial to you and the planet.
SAVE ENERGY
Perhaps the green home’s biggest appeal is its ability save energy. With rising energy costs and minimal renewable energy sources, it’s not a big surprise that homeowners are seeking refuge. Green homes can save you 30% or more on your monthly energy bills. This is accomplished by home orientation, efficient insulation, efficient HVAC systems, high performance windows, and more.
SAVE WATER
Buildings use 12% of the total water consumed in the United States. This usage can be dramatically reduced in green homes through the use of Water Sense appliances, Energy Star appliances, low flow faucets and shower heads, etc. By reducing our water consumption, we’re also reducing the amount of energy needed to purify it and deliver it to the home, as well as treat it and return it back to the environment.
HEALTHIER
Indoor pollution is a grossly underestimated problem in the United States. Your indoor environment is usually more polluted than your outdoor environment. Couple this with the fact that most Americans spend 90% of their time indoors. This can lead to troublesome health problems like asthma and cancer. Green homes’ HVAC systems are designed to have better ventilation, moisture management, filtration, etc. Also, green homes typically do not use dangerous building materials like formaldehyde and other toxic chemicals.

Though the overall outcome and motivation for going green is of course to aid in creating a better eco-friendly environment and allocation of resources for the future generations – it is exceptionally beneficial to you as well. As the craze takes off it has driven more and more people to take green into their homes, and I say that literally. Custom built green homes and buildings have become a popular investment that assists the environment and consumers alike. If you are building a home it is beneficial for numerous reasons to begin building a green home.
The first and foremost reasoning for building a green home is Energy Savings. This is done by increasing your water and heating efficiencies. There are many ways that this is done. Making sure that your home is properly insulated is a key factor. Most homes have insulation; however, making sure that you’re insulated with high quality insulation and the key word “properly” installed insulation greatly increases its efficiency. There are many voids where insulation can be installed and making sure that all of home is insulated correctly is vastly important. Another factor is upgraded windows and doors. Doubled paned windows are a must and appropriate weather stripping increases its effectiveness. Installing energy efficient appliances and systems takes another step in making sure your home is holding its value.
